Father Figure by James J. Cudney

FatherFigure

I have followed and enjoyed this author’s blog for a while now and am happy to be included in the Book Blog Tour for this book.

This well written book follows a mother and daughter through various times of their lives. The alternating chapters go between the mother in 1984 and the daughter in 2004. This complex and twisted plot could have been a difficult read but the transitions were done smoothly and easy to follow. The story develops in a logical manner.

The daughter, Brianna, has been raised soley by her mother and has unanswered questions about who her father is. She is also questioning her sexuality.  While her indecisions were realistic, the severity was portrayed in a way that I could grasp. I realize teens can be temperamental and change their minds on a dime but I still felt this character was extreme. I felt that her 180 degree personality changes were unsettling. She would say one thing and on the next page do the exact opposite.

The mother, Amalia/Molly , has moved from the only home she ever knew to raise a child by herself. I thought this would make the character a strong person but she seemed to have stayed immature in spite of it.

This was a difficult one to rate. There is a lot going on and several subplots.  All the components are there for a really good story and someone looking for a family drama should consider this book.
