Steamborn by Eric R. Asher – Book 1

This is the first book in an established series that is an exhilarating dive into the captivating world of steampunk, perfectly suited for both young adult and adult readers alike. The story revolves around Jacob, an apprentice to a skilled tinker and inventor, which sets the stage for an enthralling adventure.

Asher’s writing style made for an easy and enjoyable read, drawing you into a realm where giant insects are not only a hazardous threat but also a valuable resource. The fast-paced narrative kept me on the edge of my seat, while the detailed world-building immerses me in the unique steampunk setting.

One of the book’s strengths lies in its promising plotline. The tension between the walled city of Highlanders and the Lowlanders adds depth and intrigue to the story, and the underground discoveries only further enhance the sense of wonder.

The characters are a book highlight, with Jacob’s mentor, Charlie and his hidden life before this book, stealing the show. While Jacob and other characters are well-developed, Alice was missing something for me. My hope is that in subsequent books, I can get a better handle on her.

Be prepared for a bit of a cliffhanger ending, making it wise to have the next installment ready. “Steamborn” sets the stage for a thrilling series that promises to delight fans of steampunk and adventurous tales alike.

SUMMARY

Jacob, a tinker’s apprentice and sometime thief, has lived his entire life in the mountain city of Ancora, protected by the city walls. These towering barriers keep the Deadlands creatures at bay, but the monsters move higher into the peaks every year. More and more, they breach the defenses of the Lowlands while the Highlands rest easy.

A swarm overruns the walls and wreaks utter devastation on the Lowlands. Charles, the old tinker, suspects the attack may not be natural. With help from Jacob’s closest friend, Alice, and Samuel, one of the city’s elite spider knights, Jacob and Charles will uncover a terrible darkness at the heart of their city.
