One of resilience and transformation, Conquergood’s life-changing discovery explores the depths of family, memory, love, and the mysteries that lie at the heart of the universe.
In 2183, Jerome Conquergood is an outcast roaming the abandoned and crumbling skyscrapers of Old York City outside the Korporation’s seductive and dizzying headquarters, a post-apocalyptic security-city for the mega-rich. Despite his hatred for the techno-optimism and the Korporation, Conquergood is compelled to save his mysterious twin brother Vincent by joining the Korporation, a mega-corporate and governmental entity in a world oppressed to peace.

JENNIE READS’ REVIEW

Let’s start with the title and cover. While the cover at first glance appears simplistic, the two eyes in different colors sent me down paths into a variety of thoughts as to what appears and what is reality of worlds in this book. And the title, well – it is a literal statement that covers the book perfectly.

In this science fiction tale, C. G. Fewston takes us to the tumultuous world of 2183. We are introduced to Jerome Conquergood, a destitute outcast surviving amidst post-apocalyptic Old York City ruins. Despite his disdain for the Korporation, the last remaining mega-corporate and authoritarian governmental entity, Conquergood reluctantly joins their ranks to rescue his mysterious brother, Vincent.

Fewston’s narrative guided me as the story unraveled and I eventually discovered the intricate web of Conquergood’s personal vendetta against the oppressive Korporation. It took me a while to get into the story as the author uses a linguistic twist within the Korporation, replacing all hard ‘c’s with ‘k’s. This subtle alteration adds a layer of complexity, occasionally challenging this reader’s logical sense yet also leaving me seeking the alternation when Conquergood’s world location and speech change.

In the midst of this altered utopia, Fewston crafts a tale of suspense, rebellion, and familial bonds, exploring the delicate balance between utopia and dystopia. I highly suggest that this is a book for January. Buy it now and save it until after the rush of the holidays. Keep it for those long winter nights when I would encourage readers to take their time navigating the narrative, as the story spans several worlds and weaves a colossal web of illusions. Tucked into the pages are thought-provoking explorations of power and resilience, seamlessly blending social commentary with riveting storytelling and inviting the reader to unravel the layers at their own pace.
