I am always pleased to see a new book from this author being released into the wild. It does make me long for my librarian days when I could have handed this book to every kiddo from 10-16! The author herself is a librarian, and I think that’s what makes her books so wonderful, as she has experience knowing just what will entice a reader – of any age.
Richards skillfully ventures into the realm of light fantasy for middle schoolers, infusing her narrative with her usual brand of captivating storytelling. The plot revolves around Princesses, mermaids, and Maia, a spirited young woman navigating the uncertainties of life. The story becomes an engaging blend of fantasy elements and relatable coming-of-age themes. Notably, Richards excels in crafting a well-rounded environment through compelling supporting characters like Jude, Maia’s best friend and aspiring sleuth. The author also skillfully portrays parents from a teenager’s perspective, adding authenticity to familial dynamics. The nuanced portrayal enhances the book’s depth, making it relatable and enchanting for young readers. Readers will find themselves immersed in a thoroughly enjoyable tale.
