Recently I caught up with Robyn Peterman – which is a feat as this woman keeps an incredible schedule. Check out what’s going on in her book life and if you want more CLICK HERE!
JENNIE: You’re known for your laugh-out-loud humor and larger-than-life characters. (There may have been some snort laughing while reading As the Underworld Turns in a waiting room, but I’m still blaming the guy behind me.) Where do you pull your comedic inspiration from—real life, or do these wild scenarios just pop into your head?
ROBYN: Inspiration comes from many places for me—a song, an overheard conversation, a person at the grocery, a dream… As far as the comedy goes, I suppose it’s how I see the world. My brain is full of people and stories that I give homes on the pages of my books. Laughing is what makes me the happiest and I love that people laugh when they read my words.
JENNIE: When you sit down to start a new book, do you have a clear idea of where the story will go, or do your characters sometimes surprise you along the way?
ROBYN: I am a pantser as opposed to a plotter. So, no, I don’t have a clear idea of where a story will go. I have an idea, but it usually 360s several times during the process. I get surprised constantly and that’s one of the things I love most about writing. When it all comes together against all odds, it’s freaking glorious!
JENNIE: If you could live for a day in one of your books’ worlds, which one would you choose and why? Who would you spend your day with?
ROBYN: Depending on the day, I’d choose something different. Monday—Hot Damned with Satan and Astrid to go shopping in Paris. Tuesday—Good To The Last Death with Candy Vargo, Tim and Daisy to have lunch as long as Tim isn’t cooking. Wednesday—Good To The Last Demon with Cecily and probably Fifi. We’d eat Mexican food and drink margaritas. Thursday—Magic and Mayhem with Zelda and Sassy to learn how to fly. However, I would wear underpants, unlike Sassy. Friday—My So-Called Mystical Midlife with Clementine and Thick Stella to talk romance books! Saturday—Shift Happens with Essie and Dwayne to get tattoos. Sunday—Sea Shenanigans with Posideon to go buy self-cleaning crockpots.
Boom. Done.
JENNIE: What do you do when you hit a creative block? Any secret rituals or guilty pleasures that help you get the words flowing again?
ROBYN: I don’t really get writer’s block. If I can’t move forward, I know I took a left somewhere instead of a right. I just go back and see where the story went sideways and revise from there. Another thing I do on the regular is print by hand on a yellow legal pad with sharp pencils. That sometimes gives me totally different results than if I’m typing on a keyboard.
JENNIE: If you had to pick one of your characters to team up with in a real-life adventure, who would you choose and why?
ROBYN: Daisy from Good To The Last Death. She’s closer to my age and a total badass with a great sense of humor. I’d also bring Candy Vargo along (from the same series) because she’s insane and she makes me laugh.
JENNIE: You’ve been doing this for a while now. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers trying to find their voice?
ROBYN: Write. Write. Write. There’s a fine line between art and commerce, and you need to walk carefully. Pay attention to both. Get a critique partner that’s not your mom or your BFF. A great editor and cover artist can make of break you. Mostly, keep on writing.
JENNIE: Before heading to Coastal Magic in February, what’s the most memorable fan interaction you’ve ever had at an event? Any crazy stories? — Just so we know where the bar is set.
ROBYN: I’ve had some really nice interactions. The people who seem to love my books have terrific senses of humor and are truly lovely.
JENNIE: Book Four is coming soon in the Good To the Last Demon Series, what can readers expect?
ROBYN: More hilarious crazy!!
