Better Off Dead (A Trish Caron Mystery) by Glenda Carroll

My Review

The grisly and unexpected death of a high-powered financial guy sets off a full-on pinball game of whodunit, complete with flashing suspects, ricocheting motives, and some seriously twisty turns. Enter part-time detective Trisha, who finds herself with a little too much time on her hands during the off-season from her gig with the San Francisco Giants. So when the victim’s son asks her to poke around a bit, she figures—why not?

But what starts as a favor quickly spirals into a maze of questions with very few solid answers. The more Trisha digs, the more complicated it gets. Family drama? Check. Old friends with secrets? Yep. Disgruntled clients? Plenty. And just for kicks, there might even be a connection in—of all places—Las Vegas. Because of course there is!

Layered into the investigation is a surprising (and kind of delightful) undercurrent—pun very much intended—of open water swimming. It adds a unique and refreshing element to the story, especially if you’re like me and prefer your mysteries with a side of quirky hobbies.

This one kept me guessing and while it’s part of a series, you can easily dive in here without missing a beat. A solid, enjoyable read with plenty of intrigue, some good character moments, and just enough off-season sleuthing to keep things interesting. I’ll definitely be going back to see what other cases Trisha has gotten herself into.

Book Summary

Successful Marin County, CA financier, Andy Barlow, is training in the cold San Francisco Bay for a competitive open water swim. Unexpectedly, his support boat runs him over midstroke, killing the swimmer instantaneously. Consumed with grief and anger, Andy’s college-aged son Harrison, returns from London to probe what really happened. Although the local sheriff’s office calls the tragedy an accident, Harrison refuses to believe their findings. He reaches out to amateur sleuth Trisha Carson to hunt down the real killer.

Trisha digs into the man’s history and finds fractured relationships in his family, his business and his marriage. There’s clearly more than one person who had reason to seek a deadly revenge, but would they go as far as murder?
