I have been a fan of this series and Stephanie Plum since the first book. The humor, characters and location(Texas has my heart but I am a Jersey girl!) kept me coming back each and every book for more. Unfortunately the series had become a little too predictable and I stopped buying the books as soon as they were published each year.
This past weekend I had a road trip and when I looked through my audible I saw 24 and decided to give it a chance as I drove. All the characters I loved were still there – especially Grandma Mazur! She is a hoot. Lulu is still the zany ex-prostitute and Stephanie is still a bounty hunter who can’t decide between Joe and Ranger (really Babe – it’s Ranger all the way!)
While it was nice going back and visiting with everyone – nothing has changed. After 24 books I was looking for a different direction, or a decision, or progress and it wasn’t there. I don’t think I will be continuing this series. However, if you like the comfort of knowing the characters and exactly what they are going to do – this is a great series to jump into.
Trouble comes in bunches for Stephanie Plum. First, professional grave robber and semi-professional loon, Simon Diggery, won’t let her take him in until she agrees to care for his boa constrictor, Ethel. Stephanie’s main qualification for babysitting an extremely large snake is that she owns a stun gun—whether that’s for use on the wandering serpent or the petrified neighbors remains to be seen.
Events take a dark turn when headless bodies start appearing across town. At first, it’s just corpses from a funeral home and the morgue that have had the heads removed. But when a homeless man is murdered and dumped behind a church Stephanie knows that she’s the only one with a prayer of catching this killer.
If all that’s not enough, Diesel’s back in town. The 6-foot-tall, blonde-haired hunk is a man who accepts no limits—that includes locked doors, closed windows and underwear. Trenton’s hottest cop, Joe Morelli isn’t pleased at this unexpected arrival nor is Ranger, the high-powered security consultant who has his own plans for Stephanie.
As usual Jersey’s favorite bounty hunter is stuck in the middle with more questions than answers. What’s the deal with Grandma Mazur’s latest online paramour? Who is behind the startling epidemic of mutilated corpses? And is the enigmatic Diesel’s sudden appearance a coincidence or the cause of recent deadly events?

Thanks for the great reminder! I am around #18 or so… need to pick it up again this summer.
Sounds like the perfect Beach Read!
I haven’t read any of the Stephanie Plum books, but they definitely sound like a lot of fun! You said you got the audio version, was it well done? It seems like a series that I would enjoy as audio as I try to get the books that won’t be too complicated to follow! (I.e. Fantasy books where the names are so complicated that you have no idea who’s talking half the time!)
Definitely well done audio and easy to follow even when your map is giving you instructions between words!
I used to love this series, but I’ve grown weary of Stephanie lately. I just wish she would make a decision one way or the other.
