The Dark Tides (Book 2) by Mark Piggott

DarkTidesI choose books to read for a variety of reasons.  In my quest to be totally honest I said yes to reading this book solely because the author asked and when I read his bio I found out we were born in the same town in New Jersey!  That small world moment gave me a smile.  I am so glad the author contacted me through this blog!

This is the second book in this series and I did not read the first.  But this Science Fiction/Fantasy easily stands on its’ own as long as you read the summary too.  It has all the things I love in a good book – great characters, even if there are some trolls (literally).  A strong morally centered main character, who is loyal to his wife even when separated (just did a little swoon there!) and creative minor story accessories! Those are things like the crossover of the two worlds and conversations about fast food and SpongeBob!

This is an intense read, long and detailed, but in all the positive ways. The author does a really nice job transferring between worlds and time periods.   I would also say that I would be comfortable with high school or above reading this book.  If you want to get lost in a book for a while – this is one to jump into.

SUMMARY

The Drake family has known more than its share of tragedy at sea. After the devastating and mysterious loss of their patriarch, Bryan, to a strange storm, his grieving wife and children sail to his last known location to lay a wreath in his honor. They are caught in a storm freakishly similar to the one that took Bryan from them. A funeral becomes a joyous reunion, as they find him alive and well but equally stranded on the mysterious island of Avalon, where the descendents of King Arthur rule a world filled with knights, elves, dwarves and magic!

Lord Bryan MoonDrakeas he is now known has attained the rank of the Gil-Gamesh, protector of the realm. He helps his wife and two of his children build new lives in a medieval society. His daughter Ashley has returned to Avalon with wonderful news. Bryan sees an opportunity to bring his family back together at last, so they plan a grand Avalonian wedding for Ashley and her true love, Andrew.

But all is not well in the kingdom. Dark forces arise to fulfill a prophecy to resurrect Morgana le Fay, the most powerful sorceress in the history of Avalon. If successful, she will unleash the Dark Tides to destroy the line of Pendragon once and for all. To save his family, his new home, and his king, can the Gil-Gamesh overcome incredible odds and powers beyond his comprehension to rid Avalon of Morganas evil forever?
