This wonderful biography from the CEO of Girl Scouts USA is perfect for all Brownies and up (roughly ages 8-12 for you non-green people!)
In the spring of 2017, I had the opportunity to attend a breakfast for this author as she kicked off her new position as CEO of Girl Scouts USA. Sylvia spoke with such heart that I, a Lifetime Girl Scout, felt like a kindred spirit. Like this author, I had received the benefit of being a Girl Scout and because of that attended college and learned a lot of skills I still use to this day. Although I must admit that one of the coolest things about the event was getting a patch from Sylvia (just like the one at the end of her book)!
Sylvia Acevedo is an inspiration to all women, no matter the age. However, this book detailing her childhood is a wonderful opportunity to show our girls just what it means to never give up and to pursue your dreams.
I really wish this book was available when my daughter was working her way through the Girl Scout levels. But she still may find it gifted to her – a new copy though because this one is all mine!

SUMMARY
The inspiring memoir for young readers about a Latina rocket scientist whose early life was transformed by joining the Girl Scouts and who currently serves as CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA.
A meningitis outbreak in their underprivileged neighborhood left Sylvia Acevedo’s family forever altered. As she struggled in the aftermath of loss, young Sylvia’s life transformed when she joined the Brownies. The Girl Scouts taught her how to take control of her world and nourished her love of numbers and science.
With new confidence, Sylvia navigated shifting cultural expectations at school and at home, forging her own trail to become one of the first Latinx to graduate with a master’s in engineering from Stanford University and going on to become a rocket scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Simultaneously available in Spanish!
