The Pirate Danced and the Autocrat Died (The Celwyn Series Book 4) by Lou Kemp

I’ve read this whole series so I was happy to see the 4th installment of this gripping steampunk, “The Pirate Danced and the Automat Died.” The author transports readers to the year 1868, once again immersing them in a world where magic and machinery coexist. The narrative follows the resilient trio of Celwyn, the immortal magician; Professor Xiau Kang, the enigmatic automat; and Bartholomew, a widowed scientist hailing from Sudan. The trio’s airship faces destruction, prompting them to seek refuge on Findbar Island, where they embark on a journey of reconstruction and renewal. But there is more going on here than first greets these characters.

As the plot unfolds, Celwyn receives a distressing message from his vampire lover, Tara McFein, imprisoned in the foreboding Tower of London. The narrative gains momentum as Celwyn undertakes a perilous mission to liberate Tara, weaving a tale of suspense, danger, and the intricate dance between science and sorcery.

In the midst of the constant activity and tension there are delightful elements of levity such as the presence of Qing, a charming mechanical bird. Their quirky antics and amusing interactions with the characters inject moments of lightheartedness.

The Pirate Danced and the Automat Died is not only a riveting steampunk adventure that combines murder, mystery and magic, but also a thoroughly enjoyable and well-rounded reading experience.
