Aenor: Book One The Promise by Francesco Riccardi

Jennie’s Review

This book is a great example of brevity. The world is described, but there is little elaboration beyond the basics—just enough to give you a picture in your mind without pages of additional detail. The same is true of the characters and plotlines. We get what we need to understand what is happening, but there is always a sense that there is more beneath the surface waiting to be explored.

And then there is the writing itself, with most passages rarely stretching beyond a single line of text. At first, I wasn’t sure what to make of this very different style. It felt a little unusual and almost too sparse for me. But the more I read, the more I found my rhythm, and eventually the pages simply started to flow. What initially felt unfamiliar became part of the book’s appeal.

While the book is classified as fantasy, I see it more as a world-building and foundation-setting story. It establishes the characters, the world, and the possibilities for what is to come without trying to tell everything at once. There are plenty of places where I expect the story could go deeper as the series continues. As a first step into this world, I think it provides a solid base for the books that follow and leaves plenty of room for the story—and its characters—to grow.

Book Summary

A promise can save a life. Or condemn an entire kingdom.

Kael is seventeen, with a house full of dust and a promise to keep.

When his brother Indra vanishes in an alley in Anart, swallowed by a cold light and an impossible phrase — “I found him” — Kael has no map, no answers, and no time. He has only his mother’s last words: bring him home.

Following the few traces left behind, Kael will venture far beyond the city he knows, through wounded lands, broken people, and archives where a name can be worth more than a life. But every answer opens another door, and behind each one lies a secret older and more dangerous than Indra’s disappearance.

To find his brother, Kael must learn whom to trust, what to sacrifice, and how heavy a promise can become when someone seems determined to erase every trace of Indra.

Because some people do not disappear by chance.

And some promises, once spoken, leave no way back.

AENOR — Book I: The Promise is an epic dark fantasy about the bond between brothers, secrets buried in the past, and choices that can change the fate of an entire world.
