Accidental Activist: Justice for the Groveland Four by Josh Venkataraman and Barbara Venkataraman

Accidental

Be sure to read to the bottom as the authors are offering a chance to win this book!

When Barbara Venkataraman reached out to see if I would be interested in reading a book she co-authored with her son, I was surprised.  I enjoy her cozy mystery series as well as her entertaining essay collections but this is a non-fiction book.

If you do not know who the Groveland Four are, this is a good overview of a horrific event that happened in a small Florida town in 1949.  Written in a mix of a memoir with a bit of how-to, the main voice, Josh Venkataraman walks the reader through how he helped be a catalyst to motivate people to get involved.  The advice he gives, along with his experiences, could be applied to a wide variety of situations.

This is a quick read that contains a massive amount of information.  Read it as a memoir or a how-to, either way, you will be pleased you did.  Also, please check the birdseed at the bottom of the summary as proceeds from the sale of the book are going to a wonderful cause.

If you would like to read this book, the authors are offering a free ebook or audio book to 2 people.  Just respond in the comments and winners will be drawn on February 1 at 9 am (CT).

SUMMARY

This book will take you through my incredible four year quest for justice for The Groveland Four and teach you how to pursue your own causes, whatever they may be. It is a primer for positive action, a journey through Florida’s past as well as its future. Some of the things you will learn: everything takes more time than you think, nothing ever goes according to plan, help can come from unexpected places, time is on your side, everyone is connected to everyone else, you can reach your tipping point for success and not even realize it, your goals can change along the way, and flexibility is key. Let’s get started, shall we?

***Proceeds from the sale of this book will be used to establish “The Charles Greenlee Memorial Scholarship” to benefit a child with an incarcerated parent.
