Having read another book in this series, I jumped at a chance to go back and visit a spell with H. H. Lomax.  After being caught with a couple of extra playing cards up his sleeve and then being dangled from a train, Lomax lands in Langtry – with the infamous Judge Roy Bean and his sidekick Judge Roy Bear!  And well, it just keeps speeding along from there.

With unscrupulous lawmen at every turn, Lomax is just trying to live his life and find a way to get Judge Roy Bean’s story published as a book.  It appears that the only honest man around might be Lomax’s brother, Andy, a Texas Ranger with a good reputation.  But in spite of that connection, trouble is around every corner – sometimes just down the hall.  Even the town newspaper seems to have something against Lomax and don’t get him started about one of the newsboys selling papers.  Just when things are starting to look up – well let’s just say Lomax sorta lands in a crapper, and I’ll leave that for you to figure out.

This author is wonderful when it comes to sprinkling a story with historical facts.  The famous make cameo appearances and add to the richness of the entertainment.

This was a very fun read that had me chuckling regularly (and then having to read the line to the hubby when he asked what I was laughing about – really he should just read it himself!)  The author’s phrases entertain and, through Lomax, a rousing character is created and amusing.

I’ll leave you with a few words of wisdom – if you ever travel near Langtry, keep an eye out for the Gringo Bandito!  And if you are going to cheat at cards – don’t have all your money in your boots.
