Jennie’s Review
The author approaches the legend of Billy the Kid from a refreshingly different angle. Stepping inside Billy’s mind and imagining events from his perspective adds depth to a figure who has long been defined by myth as much as history. Blending well-researched facts with historical events, the novel feels authentic and richly textured throughout.
The attention to detail is especially impressive. References to the John Kinney gang and the inclusion of Hispano culture help create a vivid sense of time and place, making the Old West come alive without slowing the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this fresh take on Billy the Kid. As a fun side note, my dad’s name is John Kinney. So far, we haven’t found any family connection to the infamous outlaw’s associate, but he’s still holding out hope—and it certainly gives him a little extra street cred with his friends.
If you enjoy historical fiction that breathes new life into legendary figures while remaining grounded in the known history of the American West, Sing to Me Billy the Kid is well worth your time. It’s an immersive read that will appeal to fans of character-driven historical fiction as much as lovers of Western history.

Book Summary
Lost in the afterlife, Billy the Kid tells his story…
It’s Wild West, Silver City, New Mexico, 1874. Almost 14, Billy can sing and dance better than anybody, but that won’t save his mother Catherine, who is deathly ill with consumption. When Catherine discovers Billy’s plan to steal jewels to pay for medicine, she warns him that he’ll hang before he’s 21 if he doesn’t change. Guilt haunts Billy after her death.
17-year-old Billy lands a job working on a ranch in Lincoln County. Everything is okay until a gang comes for Billy’s boss, John Tunstall. His dead mother’s prophecy seems to be coming true. And Billy is drawn into The Lincoln County Wars.
The governor offers a reward to capture Billy, dead or alive, and Sheriff Pat Garrett, the local sheriff, hunts him down. On the run, Billy meets and falls in love with the Spanish beauty, Paulita.
Sing to Me Billy the Kid offers a new perspective on the famous outlaw. The call to fight injustice draws him powerfully into a web of destiny and a desire for redemption no outlaw can expect.
