NORTH TO ALASKA

Living in Texas, you would think I read a lot of Westerns – I don’t. But I might need to reconsider if they have the humor that Author Preston Lewis sprinkles throughout this enjoyable read. Following the main character H. H. Lomax through his various mishaps (Ummm adventures?) the reader travels from Colorado to Alaska.
The story is lightly tossed with historical occurrences and famous people that add to the entertainment. I will never think of Susan B. Anthony again without recalling the reaction of H. H. Lomax as he tried to assist this fine woman concerned with suffrage even though he could not understand why ladies wanted to suffer any more.
There was much in this book that was quotable (yes, the poor hubby had to listen to them all) but topping my list is appropriate for the time period advice like “If you are gonna steal from a woman, at least have the decency to do it behind her back.” Descriptions such as, “He is so slick he could pick her pockets even when she was naked.” And life lessons like “Wells Fargo should’ve kept better track of their strongboxes.” I found myself smiling on every page.
There is also an amusing scene with a talking dog, but I’ll let you discover that one on your own.
This was a delightful romp through history, and I was completely entertained with this part of a series that easily read as a standalone.

Great review! I just love a book that keeps the quotables coming — and the laughs. Can’t wait to read this one.

Great review, and I agree that the book was filled with lots of quotable lines. That made it so much fun to read.
